The Democrats’ Respectful Acceptance of Fascism

It’s good to know that we don’t have anything to worry about, with the upcoming presidency looming like every sword in Damocles’ armory. That’s the impression that the Democrats have been giving, at any rate. They were singing a different tune in the run up to the election. They were describing Trump as a fascist threat to democracy, calling the election the most important of our lifetime, warning of the terrible danger that a second Trump administration would pose for the future of the country. Listening to them lately, however, it seems like we’re going to be okay.

Isn’t that a relief?

It’s almost as if all their concern, or terror, and their will to fight, evaporated the moment they lost. Because they aren’t fighting. Democrats were acting ready for war when they assumed that Trump would lose and deny he lost and incite a second insurrection. But after he conned enough of this country’s credulous jackasses to vote for him, and almost certainly cheated, to win the popular vote and electoral college, the Dems sure lost their fighting spirit and their determination to ensure that the country doesn’t fall to fascism.

Following their shameful defeat, we have been subjected to the most embarrassing displays of acquiescence and false optimism from Democrats, starting right from the top. Harris’s pathetic concession speech was bad enough, and then Biden had to go and top it off by inviting Trump into the White House for a cordial fireside chat. All the while, they drone on about the importance of having a peaceful transfer of power. They proudly proclaim how they respect the election results and appear to relish demonstrating how cooperative they are. Yeah, great fucking job, losers. Super admirable how you totally shit the bed and then kindly and calmly handed over the keys to the country to a fascist regime.

The Democrats have never fought the way they should, the way they need to, if they actually give a shit about this country, its people, any of the values they profess to care about. They sure don’t fight the way the Republicans do. Republicans can do any underhanded shit they please in order to achieve their aims, and all Democrats do is complain. Republicans lie and cheat and steal from the American people and Democrats, at most, express their ineffectual disapproval. They insist on abiding to a set of rules while the Republicans have pissed on the gameboard and thrown the pieces in the microwave. They’ll say that what the Republicans are doing is wrong, as if we don’t know, as if it matters when the end result is that the Republicans get what they want; they succeed, and we all lose. We need to fight, and the Democrats have demonstrated their inability or disinclination to do so.

If the threat of the second Trump presidency had been overhyped, if it was all political rhetoric the Democrats were exploiting in order to win the election, and then they gave up the ruse after their abysmal defeat, that’d be one thing. But the threat is very real. If anything, the Democrats undersold it, and did a disservice by reducing the impending disaster to lackluster campaign talking points. Trump, the people he surrounds himself with, the ideas they promote, and the harm that they intend to inflict upon the country and world, are genuine existential threats. But hey, we’ll all fondly remember how you respected the traditions and norms of this ersatz democracy after it’s been completely dismantled, the air and water are thick with poison, everything’s aflame, people are living in fear under a totalitarian nightmare regime, and anyone who doesn’t tow the line of the white supremacist christo-fascist state is in a forced labor camp. We’ll be so proud of how the Democrats respected the peaceful transition of power then.
